Open interface development

The key output of this work-package is a set of downloadable interfaces between existing models. These are free to use software tools that provide a generic connection between two or more models (or model categories).

An example of an interface is one that passes trajectory data from a microscopic traffic simulation model to a microscopic emission model.

These interfaces are aimed at users with access to the relevant demand, traffic or emission models and the knowledge to use them. If you are conducting a CO2 assessment for an ITS application following the Amitran process (see the Checklist), the interfaces accessible from this page will allow you to convert the output files from one model into a format that can be inputted into the next model in the process.

Amitran has developed and implemented several interfaces - see the links below to access them. You will of course need the models mentioned for each interface in order to use it.

An interface in Amitran consists of two parts: generic interface and several implementation-specific adapters. The generic part contains all the internal processes of the interface and defines a generic data format (i.e. Amitran generic format). The adapters connect a model implementation into the generic part (i.e. translate the model-specific I/O into the generic I/O of the generic interface). The generic interface are described as XML schemata and made publicly available (see http://sumo.dlr.de/trac.wsgi/browser/trunk/sumo/data/xsd/amitran).

The Amitran Generic Formats for the exchange of data between models are independent of specific model implementations which means they are not related to the manufacturers of specific models. “Implementation specific” adapters are used to convert native formats into the respective Amitran Generic Format.

Users can freely access the following tools to convert files from/to the Amitran Generic Format:

1)     Java-based Amitran Conversion Tool

What it does:

This is a downloadable executable file which converts the output of the models listed below into the following Amitran Generic Formats

  • Trajectory Format
  • Linkdata Format

File types treated:

Microscopic traffic simulation models:

  • ITS Modeller
  • VISSIM

Macroscopic traffic simulation models:

  • Omnitrans
  • DynaSmart

How to download and run:

The file can be downloaded in zip format by clicking here.

In order to run the conversion tool you need to have the following programs installed:

                1 Java JRE (http://java.com/nl/download/)

                2 Python (http://www.python.org/download/)

Optional:

                1 LXML (http://lxml.de/) - this is needed for validating the input file against an xsd schema

As a Java file, the program can be launched by typing "java -jar amitraninterfaces.jar" into the command console.

Note for MS Windows:

The command console can be found in the "Start" menu. Alternatively, you can open the command console by holding shift while right-clicking on the folder the console shall be opened within.

Please make sure you are in the folder containing the file "amitraninterfaces.jar" when trying to launch the Amitran conversion tool utilising the command console.

Alternatively, you can double-click the "Amitran Conversion Tool" link (not the icon file which is named ".ico").

The files to be converted can be chosen by selecting either a source model implementation (e.g. ITS Modeller or VISSIM) or an Amitran generic format (depending which conversion is exactly intended) and the target format (e.g. Amitran generic trajectories to Versit+ files), both via the respective drop down list.

    2) Integrated implementation specific adapter in the open-source SUMO microscopic traffic and emission model implementation.

    What it does:

    This adapter converts the outputs of the SUMO microscopic traffic model into the Amitran Generic Trajectory format for input into the PHEM and HBEFA microscopic emission models.
